Bus Shelter Poll Responses (separated by ****)

Note added 6th July. The figures given at the Annual Parish Meeting were 7 for a shelter & 7 against. When compiling this list it was noticed that there were 2 duplicated entries (both for a shelter with no comment). One has been removed from the details below, so at the time of the meeting it should have been 6 for & 7 against. There were other responses after the meeting.

One email address "bounced" when sent an email. These are all reasons why this kind of poll result are indicative only & a much larger response would be required to be of real significance.

(1) Who has asked for the bus shelter here?
(2) What sort of bus shelter is proposed? If it is a modern steel framed with glazed panels this would look out of keeping with the common rural aspect.
Also these bus shelters are always being vandalised by having the glass smashed etc leading to glass on the road and common. and who would be responsible for up keep and replacement/repair etc.
Finally there are no owners of the common just trustees

We recognise the need to encourage people to use public transport and therefore the need for shelter, but we share the concern of many local residents that the shelter will become a target for vandals and a meeting point for unsocial activities. Vandalism and antisocial behaviour in this area, particularly inthe evenings at weekends, is already a real issue. It would be a pity, if , having controlled antisocial behaviour around the village hall by the installation of CCTV, that a new focus should be created. A separate concern is that any shelter, if provided, should be sited well away from the corner junction - thus the description "at Hall Corner" should be dropped. Linda and Alan Steynor

Although I agree that a shelter is desirable, consideration should be given to the fact that it would be easy to obstruct the view of drivers turning left from the hall/doctors into the Common. Given that this corner is already difficult to navigate because of traffic coming through a blind corner from Long Lane, the placing of the bus shelter should be in the safest possible position.

I am concerned for the people who live opposite the proposed site that they have their view changed from the common to a bus shelter!!
What about a youth shelter elsewhere for young people to hang out in-seems to have helped in other villages?

This is surely another encroachment onto the common. There is already tarmac on that corner (who allowed that ?) Who will pay for repairs / cleaning etc when it's vandalised (as it surely will be).

just look at how the trolley shelter at the new co-op is being used already! Any shelter will attract gangs who have no intention of waiting for a bus. We should be vigorously resisting any further building on common land.

Good idea and do not think it will detract from the common itself, as long as this doesn't lead to other "building" on the land.

It encourages the use of public transport, and will be situated at a very exposed spot in the village. Positives outweigh the negatives.

I understand there are 2 bus stops proposed on the Common and that they'll be fairly modern structures, which won't really be in keeping with the area - I have heard that the bus co. do not want a shelter at Hall Corner because drivers feel it's a dangerous place to pick-up/drop-off and would prefer to be able to stop further along, opp. the Clinic or chemist?? Many people wait for buses opp. the little post box at Long Lane/Bluebell Rd. junction but there's no mention of a shelter there, probably because there's no room. How many people wait for buses at the Forge Orchard stop? I think we've managed all these years without and shelters would be more trouble than they're worth. I find it quite surprising that this has even come up considering how difficult it has always been to get anything put on the common - even a short footpath from the middle school exit for the safety of children who had to use the vehicle access, particularly when muddy, until the pathway was put inside the school boundary to Birchfield Lane. Will be interested to hear others' view.

Going on how the bus shelter opposite the new Co-op was always full of broken bottles, litter, graffiti, not to mention the smell of urine; why waste your money by installing yet another toilet for the local scum. Yes it is unfair on those who would use it as a shelter, but within 2 or three nights, people will be stood outside the shelter even in the rain, due to the smell/state of it!!!

Bus passengers, by their very nature, are used to being outside in inclement weather and are usually prepared. There is already too much roadside clutter in Mulbarton, spoiling idyllic views across The Common. We should be romoving this, not adding to it.

It will only attract more vandalisam to the village and cause more dispaire to the residents of the village espesialy thoes close to the proposed shelter.
